SAMANTHA LEE
Statement
I explore concepts surrounding death, sex, and the unconscious mind in my work. These themes fascinate me when working together because of how primal they feel. That honest vulnerability is what drives my inspiration. I experience it when researching the macabre, the sensual, and the depths of imagination. I strive to give audiences similar visceral reactions when viewing my work. I use texture for a tactile effect in my two- and three-dimensional works. The figure itself inspires me, and it is a universal device for communicating my ideas. The physical interaction between the senses and art is what drew me to metalsmithing and jewelry as mediums. History and psychology influence my work as well. With research on the connotations of each, color and animal symbolism selectively appear in my work to create mood. Traditional mediums like colored pencils, charcoal, and watercolor in my drawings feel grounding to my artistic identity; just as the pounding, forging, and soldering of metals bring me a primitive satisfaction.
